ND filters

Reducing the light level

An ND filter works by limiting the light that reaches the camera sensor, effectively allowing for longer exposures without overexposing the image.

This is especially useful in bright conditions, such as during daylight or when shooting reflective surfaces like water. By slowing down the shutter speed, it is possible to capture motion blur in clouds, waterfalls, and waves, adding a sense of movement and drama to the shot.

There are three types of filter mounting systems: filters that slot into a holder mounted on the camera lens, those that screw onto the lens and a two part magnetic mounting system, in effect a holder and filters.

LEE Filters are renowned for their high-quality ND filters, offering a range of options to suit various photographic needs. Their most famous product, the "Big Stopper," is a 10-stop ND filter that dramatically extends exposure times.

An excellent example of the Big Stopper’s capabilities is the image in this week’s Monday Picture  taken at sunset at Morston Quay in Norfolk. The filter allowed for a long exposure of 25 seconds that transformed the moving water and drifting clouds into a serene and painterly scene, highlighting the stunning colours of the setting sun while maintaining a sharp foreground. Without the filter the exposure would have been approximately 1/40 second, the “f stop” or aperture setting remains the same at f8. This effect is almost impossible to achieve without the aid of a high-quality ND filter.

The Lee Filters LEE Stopper app, available for the iPhone, is an excellent and quick way of converting shutters speed settings from without to with ND filters and it's free.

Urth combines sustainability with innovation, producing ND filters that are not only effective but also environmentally friendly. Their filters are made from high-quality German SCHOTT glass, known for its clarity and durability. Urth ND filters come in various densities, providing flexibility for photographers to control the amount of light entering the lens precisely. What sets Urth apart is their commitment to the environment. For every product sold, Urth plants a tree, making it an excellent choice for eco-conscious photographers. Their ND filters maintain colour accuracy and sharpness, ensuring that your images retain their natural look while achieving the desired long exposure effects.

Kase is another top contender in the ND filter market, known for its precision engineering and robust build quality. Kase ND filters are made from high-quality optical glass, featuring multi-layer coatings that reduce reflections and enhance image clarity. Their Wolverine series is particularly popular, offering scratch-resistant and shockproof filters that can withstand tough shooting conditions. Kase ND filters are designed to provide consistent performance across the entire frame, avoiding issues like colour cast or vignetting. This reliability makes them a favourite among professional photographers who need dependable gear for their outdoor shoots.

Today there are many companies making filters for photographers across a wide range of prices, the three above are generally considered to be among the best although there are several others who also produce excellent products.
